Welcome

You can use the Wellington UHF PRS Channel 8 Repeater if you're within range by putting the radio into "Duplex" mode (the button marked "DUP" on most radios). You should hear a short burst (tail) and a beep after you transmit.

There are two basic types of antenna you may find commonly being used in conjunction with Two-way UHF PRS Radio Equipment. The two designs we are focusing on are the "Vertical Whip" and "Yagi Antenna". Each design has it's unique benefits and drawbacks but there is a place for each configuration and knowing the useful attributes of each design may be useful to get the most out of your equipment in different locations.

Wellington - Christchurch  Over the last couple of months a couple of keen PRS Radio operators “Scott” ‘777’ and "Dave 820" based out of Christchurch have been thrilling our local operators by making regular long distance UHF calls exceeding 300km and succeeding in getting into our local PRS Radio Repeater based on the Western Hutt Hills overlooking Wellington.

PRS Radios as Emergency Communication devices can prove to be a very helpful pieces of equipment. They can assist in providing local contact or updates to disaster situations from your vehicle, home base or mobile set-up. They can be used to contact your neighbors, friends or family and assist in your rescue.

A radio net, or simply net, is an “on-the-air” gathering of radio operators. Most nets convene on a regular schedule and specific frequency or channel, and are organized for a particular purpose, such as relaying messages, discussing a common topic of interest, or simply as a regular gathering of friends for conversation.

We want to encourage radio enthusiasts interested in getting on the air and  ultimately encourage them to get into Amateur ("Ham") radio.

A small band of dedicated radio enthusiasts have setup the Wellington Channel 8 PRS repeater on the Western Hutt hills. A big thanks to Bruce and John for making a dream like this reality.
