Wellington PRS Channel 8 Duplex Repeater
The Wellington UHF PRS Channel 8 Duplex Repeater has been setup by a small band of dedicated radio enthusiasts. The Repeater is situated on the Western Hutt Hills giving it good coverage throughout Wellington City and the Hutt.
A big thanks to Bruce and John for making a dream like this reality.
The PRS Channel 8 Repeater has been operating since July 2013
Duplexer on top, nice and shinyThis is it, PRS 8 ready to be installed. If only we could charge users a fee to use it we'd be rich..... alas, we cant. :-( Photo by John Wysocki “WN-HRB” | As Installed On SiteA slightly better view of the picture on the home page Photo by John Wysocki “WN-HRB” | The Duplexer filter as it arrivedThe Duplexer filter as it arrived from Europe. Fresh out of the box; one new duplexer. Untouched, unspoiled and unplugged. Now where's that cable gone........? For the technically inclined: Pass frequency loss 2.9 to 3.0dB. Notch depth -90dB. Power handling 25 Watts. Temperature range 0 to 30 degrees. Current PRS licensing limits PRS repeaters to 20 Watts EIRP. With a gain antenna such as the RFI COL5000 the transmitter only needs to operate at 16 Watts and this is well within the duplexer max |

The Radios - Vertex Standard VX-2200Here is a picture of the twin Vertex Standard VX-2200 20 watt model radios that make the repeater. Receiver can be seen as Ch-38 477.350 MHz on the left and the Transmitter can be seen as Ch-8 476.600 MHz on the right. Photo by John Wysocki “WN-HRB” | The PRS8 ControllerHere is a picture of the controller that runs the PRS8 repeater. This device is a short form implementation of a VK5DJ design. The controller uses DTMF tones as the primary control method. The repeater trustees can manipulate many operational parameters which are then stored in EEPROM. The processor is a PIC 16F628A. The controller generates that beep you hear on the repeater tail. Well actually its the budgie we stuck in the box that does that. This controller was built by Paul Smith ZL2UGR | Radio InterfaceThe DB9 connector is the controller interface to the repeater radios and power supply. All control signals and audio lines are presented on this one connector. The controller is encased in a die-cast aluminum enclosure so stray radio signals do not pass into or out off the controller. Duplexer from a radio perspectiveThis is how the Duplexer looks from a radio perspective The network analyzer traces show the pass and notch parameters of the duplexer filters. If you're a radio or antenna this is important to you. As a user however you can just enjoy the superb performance the repeater has because of it.
