"What is PRS Radio?"
UHF PRS (Ultra High Frequency - Personal Radio Service) is a radio system/band that allows individuals to operate radio transmitters and receivers for personal purposes with minimal or no special license or individual authorization.
The New Zealand Government’s Ministry of Commerce introduced PRS in
1996 to allow freely available short-range wireless communications outside
the 26 MHz CB band. The UHF (and not VHF) band was selected for this
purpose due to its ability to withstand atmospheric and ground-wave
interference unlike the existing 26 MHz CB Band allocated.
This general user radio licence notice covers the operation of radio
transmitting equipment used for “Personal Radio Service (PRS)”
(but does not include PRS repeaters).
Personal radio services exist around the world and typically comprise of
"walkie talkie" portable radio equipment and "Mobile" or "Base" sets.
